WHAT IS A SPRING PIN AND WHY USE IT?

The Spring pin is a slotted or coiled cylindrical fastener, heat-treated or work hardened to achieve optimum toughness, resilience and shear strength. In manufacture, it is formed to a controlled diameter greater than the hole into which it is pressed. Spring pins are stronger than mild carbon steel straight pins, taper pins or grooved pins of equivalent sizes.

WHAT IT DOES:

Compressed as it is driven into a hole, the Spring pin exerts continuous spring pressure against the sides of the hole, positively preventing loosening by vibration. Spring pin dimensions, outside diameters in their free state and elastic limits are engineered so that this self-locking action is achieved in holes drilled to normal production tolerances. No reaming operations are needed to assure a tight fit. No secondary operations are required to keep Spring pins in position.

SAVES COST: The self-locking Springpin itself costs less than most tapered, notched, grooved or serrated pins. The installed cost is far less than fasteners requiring auxiliary locking means.

SAVES WEIGHT: Being hollow, the Spring pin is lighter than a solid pin. Because it is self-locking, it saves the weight of projecting heads, tabs, and extra locking parts.

SAVES MAINTENANCE: Since the Spring pin stays in place, it improves product reliability, cuts maintenance cost. Because the Spring pin conforms to the drilled hole in which it is inserted and is not a splined or notched type pin, there is little wear on the hole; it is not necessary to re-drill and use a larger size pin.

SAVES TROUBLE: "Easy does it" at every step with the Spring pin. Easily inserted - by hand or machine; readily removed for field servicing; easily replaced.

SAVES REJECTS: Since the Spring pin is self-locking in an ordinary drilled hole, it eliminates the rejections and waste associated with close tolerances.

SAVES TIME: The Springpin not only saves time at each operation - it eliminates some operations altogether and in many instances permits a reduction in number of parts to be assembled.

HOW TO INSERT A SPRINGPIN

Drives easily . . . by hammer, arbor press, or air cylinder and can be readily adapted to an automatic hopper feed. Requires only a standard hole, drilled to normal production line tolerances.

Locks securely in place . . . without using a secondary locking device; won't loosen despite impact loading, stress reversals or severe vibration.

Removes readily with a drift pin . . . without damage to pin or hole.

Uses of SPRINGPINS TO INITIATE, TRANSMIT OR CONTROL MOTION

Springpin functions as a key to drive a handwheel.

As cylinder is moved (in direction of arrow):
A) Spring pin in helical slot causes rotation.
B) Spring pin acts as stop.
C) Spring pin acts as indexing stop member.

Spring pin used as a shaft.

Spring pin serves to index cam and carry light loads in servo mechanism.

The Spring pin holds firmly under the shock of this snap/drop-off application.

Design for changing horizontal motion to vertical oscillating motion uses Springpin as a sliding bearing.

Spring pin pressed into shaft slides in slot .... Prevents shaft rotation.

Two 1/8" Spring pins project into groove in shaft to retain a turning gear in position.

Springpins are easily inserted in the field in the back of thermostat dial to limit travel.

As a cam rise pin, the cam face bears on Springpin held in plate.

As a locating pin and anti-rotating device on power steering servo valve.

SPRINGPINS AS LOCATING OR POSITIONING DEVICES

Used in a spring cartridge the Springpin replaces a stop ring.

Revolving chair assembly is shipped knocked down to customer. Springpin is factory-inserted in base. When spider is dropped in place, customer simply taps Springpin in place and assembly is secure.

As a triple-purpose fastener, Springpin:
A) Locates vertical position, prevents sliding up.
B) Retains spring.
C) Acts as limit stop in unwind direction. Lower Springpin eliminates need for shoulder on shaft.

On side loaded, bearing guided table lift, the internal threads on the lift nut are Springpins. They can be readily placed or rotated for wear, and save boring threads.

Doweling pillow blocks and motor frames to base plates, Springpin maintains alignment ..... assures quick and easy realignment when re-assembling.

For jigs and fixtures not subject to heavy loads or twisting forces, Springpin permits fast installation.

CONSIDER THE SPRING PIN AS AN INEXPENSIVE HANDLE OR LATCH

Two Rollpins serve as handle and latch on a piece of farm equipment. Replace forged handle and fabricated piece of metal.

Handle turns freely on shaft retaining groove; cross-hole and shaft hole are cored. No projections to harm operator.

Strong, lightweight, and full body fastener - coiled pins used in an industrial fuse assembly achieve both a fastening function and help prevent internal insulating material from leaking out.

Coiled pin used as a fulcrum point and fastener in a heavy duty cargo latch component.

Try Springpin to assemble any type of laminated handle.

Laminates held by Springpin for form grinding are cut away after both sides are profiled.

In this spring-loaded type bayonet application, a Springpin replaces a threaded crosspin for a cost saving. Due to its hardness, Springpin is also better able to withstand the release impact, so performance is improved, too.

No more "lost" set screws when small knobs, handles or latches are Spring pinned.
