Specialty Fasteners
Specialty fasteners and hardware are specialized or proprietary fasteners,
fastening hardware, or other fastening products. There are several types of
specialty fasteners and hardware. Examples include industrial fasteners,
stainless steel fasteners, textile fasteners, snap fasteners, plastic fasteners,
automotive fasteners, and Velcro® fasteners. An industrial fastener such as a
bolt, nut, and rivet are used to bind construction materials together. A
stainless steel fastener is used in construction, plumbing, and the automotive
industry. Stainless steel fasteners are also widely used in cars and motorcycles
due to their property of maintaining shiny luster over time. A textile fastener
is used in the textile industry for manufacturing of textiles and other related
products. A snap fastener is commonly used in place of buttons and has become
very popular in clothing, travel bags, and folders.

Plastic fasteners come in all
shapes and sizes and can be used for both general purpose and tailored
applications. An automotive fastener is usually meant for use in automobile
brakes, engines, transmissions, and chassis applications. A Velcro fastener is
used in clothing, shoe, and automotive industries due to its ability to provide
a firm bond under tension, which comes apart easily when desired. Other
specialty fasteners and hardware are commonly available.
Specialty fasteners and hardware function in a variety of ways. Using a
specialty fastener, two or more objects can be bound or fastened together. A
stainless steel fastener is a very strong fastener having high tensile strength
used to fasten objects, which are exposed to highly corrosive and hot
conditions. A snap fastener is a pair of two interlocking discs that binds two
objects mechanically. A snap fastener also produces a snap sound while locking.
A textile fastener employ systems such as hook elements, mushroom elements, and
loop elements for the purpose of binding fabrics. A plastic fastener can be used
where features such as chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength,
UV stability, non-conductivity, and high strength are desired. A Velcro fastener
can bind two components together by tangling enough hooks on one side of a
fastener in enough loops to form a firm grip. Another important type of
specialty fastener and hardware is the automotive fastener, which is made to be
used in engines, drive lines, vehicle assembly and brake systems. Specialty
fasteners and hardware are designed and manufactured to meet most industry
specifications.
Specialty fasteners and hardware are used in almost everything we used in
day-to-day living. Some specialty fasteners and hardware are not suitable for
some particular situations. For example stainless steel fasteners cannot be
heat-treated. This may lead to a condition known as galling in which cold
welding of components takes place and they are fused together. A fastener
manufacturer produces specialty fasteners and hardware according to the given
specifications and requirements.
