Nails
Nails are mechanical fasteners that are driven into materials such as wood with a hammer or nail gun. They are made of metal or plastic materials and differ in terms of head style. Common types of nails include brad nails, cap nails, double-headed nails, finishing nails, masonry nails, and roofing nails. A brad nail is a flat nail with a head on one side. A cap nail has a square or round head. A double-headed nail has a collar that is located away from the head. A finishing nail is designed for applications where the nail head must be hidden from view. A masonry nail has a single head and is usually made of hardened steel. A roofing nail has a relatively large head and is designed to resist weathering. Nails with other head styles are also available.

Nails differ in terms of features and materials of construction. Common nails have larger nail shank diameters than other nails. A brad nail is galvanized and is available in different lengths, head shanks, heads, and point types. A cap nail is driven with a hammer and has a strong outer rim for increased rupture values. The collar on a double-headed nail keeps the nail’s head away from the wood. A double-headed nail is easy to remove and suitable for scaffolding or other temporary work. Finishing nails are small in diameter and have a barrel-shaped head with a dimple on top. A finishing nail may have a slight dent or cup in its head and require hammered until the fastener is almost flush with the surface. Masonry nails are relatively thick in diameter and designed to fasten metal or wood to masonry or concrete. These nails are available in different lengths and gauge sizes. Roofing nails are galvanized nails that can be removed from shingles as necessary.
